week10 Under the information environment
As John Naughton writes in the article The goal is to automate us': welcome to the age of surveillance capitalism "Digital technology is separating the citizens in all societies into two groups: the watchers and the watched"
In today's age of information discourse and technology, it is easy to see that technology is advancing, communication methods are becoming faster and search engines have been perfected to allow all kinds of data to be collected promptly. On the surface, it seems to make life easier, but potentially, people don't even realise that a mobile phone, computer, etc. around them is always observing everyone's search habits through recording functions, big data analysis, etc. Based on this data, relevant content is launched, mainly for products, news, advertising...
On the surface it doesn't seem to be a big problem, perhaps it makes life easier. But when you look deeper, isn't this a form of consumer baiting?
Looking more deeper, on the surface this does not involve the issue of privacy, but when data generated by users through clicks etc. is collected and re-used by big data etc., does this involve the right to privacy and does this data belong to the user or the business? There is no way of knowing.
